Tutorial Seven

This tutorial was about Assistive Technology.

Cook and Hussey define Assistive Technology as any item, piece of equipment or product system whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified or customized that is used to increase or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities.

An example of a piece of assistive technology are switches. Switch systems are a combination of Hardware used with appropriate software that scans through options on the computer screen allowing a user to trigger the switch when the option they wish to choose is highlighted on the screen. Switches enable an individual who has reliable control of one or more movements to control any electronic device which is equipped with an appropriate switch interface/connection. (Retrieved from http://abilitynet.wetpaint.com/page/Switches on 22 June 2010). The cost of them range anywhere from $5.00 - $500. This item increases the functional capacity of the user by allowing them to be actively involved in activities and their decision making.

Tutorial Six

This tutorial was based on the internet and online communities

The online community that I decided to search was Facebook. This social networking site's web address is www.facebook.com. This website aims to allow people to stay in touch no matter where in the world they live. It has a private chat application as well as a 'wall' for each user which people can write on. There are also photo albums which you can upload pictures, these along with your wall are available for people you accept or add as your friend on the site. It is a very interactive site, as the users are constantly able to interact with each other in one form or another.
This is an example of a facebook conversation:
Stacey - Lauren: so i am up next sat...in 6 days =D for the first time since march haha quite excited really lol.

As you can see, it is a very informal social based website. This means that some ethical issues may arise. Privacy, again is a key one. As mutual friends are able to read your conversations if they are not in the private chat service. If you chose to put photos up then people can see these. There are privacy settings that can be set to prevent strangers looking through your page and photos. The main benefits of this community is that you can keep in touch with anybody anywhere in the world, you can see what they are up to by the updates they make and photos that they put up. However, it also lacks some things that traditional communities can provide, such as face to face social interaction. We are slowly loosing touch with this as we become more reliant on technology to stay in touch with people. If somebody is not connected with this site and regularly go on it then this form of communication is gone, leaving you with nothing.

Tutorial Four and Five

This tutorial was about video production.

YouTube offers a range of services, the main service that is used is uploading pictures onto it and watching some of the many videos that other users have uploaded. This is similar to blogs as you create a profile and get a collection of videos you have uploaded under the username. You can add people as friends and follow the videos that they upload.

Storyboarding is a series of drawings of the proposed film as they will appear on screen. By Storyboarding the short film before filming it, you can check progress and add or discard scenes. This allows you to have a clear idea and picture of each scene and how it is meant to go. We found that by storyboarding our short film everybody understood what we were doing and in which order, it saved us time and confusion.

The script is how the characters are going to communicate with the audience. This does not have to be through speech, it can be facial expressions, moods, lighting, sound effects and movement etc. We planned how we were going to get our point across in the script, which meant the person filming it knew what type of camera angle we wanted and what the people being filmed were required to do to achieve the desired effect.

Tutorial Three

This tutorial focused on creating blogs and finding out more about the services this website provides.

Blogger is a free site that provides a wide range of services; the main service is the opportunity for members to write a blog, expressing their ideas and opinions on a subject of their choice. This can be used from anything from a personal journal to an informative collection of links and information. They can search other blogs on the site and chose to follow these. Comments can be left on the posts on other people’s blogs. One the page, they can also add videos, gadgets and information about themselves.

Many other websites provide similar services such as another popular website www.livejournal.com.

Tutorial One

This tutorial was about Information Technology (IT)and Ethical Issues.

Williams and Sawyer (2007) Information technology is a general term that describes any technology that helps to produce, manipulate, store, communicate and/or disseminate information. Information technology now has an important role in our society, it is very uncommon for somebody to not own or at least be familiar with at least one item of technology. Even children around the age of 13 are getting their first cell phone, and use other technology devices such as computers and i-pods on a daily basis. So IT now plays an important role in our lives, as it is, for most, the key tool for communication. I personally feel comfortable using my cell phone, laptop, television, desktop computers, DVD players, i-pods, digital cameras and blackberry. Most of which I use on a daily basis. In my OT fieldwork experiences IT is being used as a way to document goals with clients, as they continue to keep a written copy of the clients file the only information kept on the computer is the discharge summary and the list of goals the allied health staff have made for the client. This means they are easily updated and accessible.

There are some ethical issues with IT. Privacy and confidentiality are the main ethical issues that will rise from capturing, sharing and transferring of information through IT devices. People can now easily take pictures, text or call with their mobile phones in the matter of a few minutes. This means it is now a simple task to exchange information using a mobile phone. The internet also provides a way for people’s privacy to be taken, websites can be created by anybody and therefore any information can be uploaded and shared through this.

There are a number of technical terms involved in IT. I will define a few of these for you.
Computer ethics is set of moral principles that regulate the use of computers. Some common issues of computer ethics include intellectual property rights (such as copyrighted electronic content), privacy concerns, and how computers affect society. Retrieved from http://www.techterms.com/definition/computerethics on 22 June 2010.

intellectual property (IP) is a term referring to a number of distinct types of creations of the mind for which property rights are recognised--and the corresponding fields of law. Under intellectual property law, owners are granted certain exclusive rights to a variety of intangible assets, such as musical, literary, and artistic works; discoveries and inventions; and words, phrases, symbols, and designs. Common types of intellectual property include copyrights, trademarks, patents, industrial design rights and trade secrets in some jurisdictions. Retrieved from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intellectual_property on 22 June 2010.

social justice is concerned with equal justice, not just in the courts, but in all aspects of society. This concept demands that people have equal rights and opportunities; everyone, from the poorest person on the margins of society to the wealthiest deserves an even playing field.
Retrieved from http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-social-justice.htm on 22 June 2010.

An informed consent can be said to have been given based upon a clear appreciation and understanding of the facts, implications, and future consequences of an action. Retrieved from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Informed_consent on 22 June 2010

I think that ITC will play a great role in our practice and currently does in our daily lives. If we were to go a week, maybe even a day, without any form of technology, we would struggle and perhaps not even be able to do it. We have become extremely reliant on it and it has become our main form of communication. In my opinion this along with the ethical issues it encompasses are of great importance as they will make us a more aware and ethically correct practitioner.
