Tutorial Two

Are digital cameras better than film cameras?
The majority of people say that they prefer the way film pictures look compared to digital images. To get this look though, requires more time and effort. they also have an increased cost with it as price of printing the pictures off a digital camers is for each individual picture and continues to decrease whereas with the film prints you pay for the entire film to be developed including the dud ones that will just end up in the rubbish. I personally prefer digital cameras, as you can scroll through the pictures on there and delete the ones you do not want or did not turn out. You also do not have to pay for them to be printed off. The quality of the pictures, for me, is fine and it saves me time and money. I also like the fact that you can transfer them to your computer and have permanent copies of them if something were to happen to the original.
In a digital camera is a memory stick which automatically saves the pictures taken to it. This can be removed and put into computers and lap tops, allowing a copy of the images to be stored on the computers as well as on the card. Most cameras also come with a cord that will attach the camera to anything with a USB plug. This means the images can be transferred to devices with the plug. A common use for this is to view them on a television. Programmes to manipulate the images can easily be downloaded off the internet. they are usually free and easy to use.
The large improvement in technology and cameras has raised ethical issues. Privacy is a main one. People may not intend to include them in pictures taken but they may be visible in the background. Confidentiality is also valid. Not everybody will want their photos taken and shown to people, both of these issue can be overcome by informed consent. If the person is aware their photo is being taken and what that photo will be used for then there is no ethical issue.

Cameras are being used in OT practice by taking pictures of the clients or their homes on a home visit to document the sessions or their environment. These photos can also be used to show people what OT is and the types of things that are done within it.

There are many websites that are made specifically for photo storage. Flickr is one of these, it allows you to upload and share your photos. after these photos have been uploaded you can then personalise these pictures. As well as use these photos to create posters, cards etc. You can also upload and share videos. It gives you the option to add contacts and explore their profiles. www.photobucket.com is another useful website that offers similiar services.

Optical vs Digital Zoom
Most cameras have both of these features. Optical zoom works just like a zoom lens on a film camera, the lens changes focal length and magnification as it is zoomed. Digital zoom simply crops the image to a similar size, then enlarges the cropped portion to fill the frame again. digital zoom results in a significant loss of quality whereas with optical zoom the quality remains high.
The pictures are made up of a thing called pixels. A pixel is the number of individuals pixels that go into making each image. Digital images are made up of small squares. Though a digital photograph looks smooth and continuous just like a regular photograph, it's actually composed of millions of tiny squares. A million of these are called a megapixel.
